Cop gets shot in head at Dunkin’ Donuts. LOL

Posted in Dead Police, Actions Against Police on October 31st, 2007

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP)

A police officer was shot in the head at a Dunkin’ Donuts shop Wednesday morning, a day after another officer was shot in the shoulder during a chase.

Police gather at the site where an officer was shot in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday.

The officer injured in Wednesday morning’s shooting was taken to a hospital, but his condition was not immediately known, according to Officer Raul Malveiro, a police spokesman.

Police did not know whether the suspect fled in a vehicle or on foot.

The shooting came about 12 hours after a masked gunman shot Traffic Officer Mario Santiago in the shoulder during a chase downtown.

Santiago was responding to a report of a gunman in a sport utility vehicle shooting at another car, injuring two men and a woman, police said.

After Santiago chased the SUV, the gunman eventually got out of his vehicle and approached the squad car, firing twice through the window. Santiago was hit once in the right shoulder, police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said.

Santiago survived, but his condition was not known Wednesday morning.

The gunman in that shooting apparently jumped into the Schuylkill River, where searchers later recovered a body. Police said Wednesday morning that they had not determined if it was the suspect’s body.

Ex-Chicago Officer Found Guilty In Murder-For-Hire Plot

Posted in Chicago PD on October 21st, 2007

CHICAGO

A former Chicago Police officer faces life in prison after being convicted Thursday of plotting a murder-for-hire.

A jury deliberated nearly six hours before finding Edward Leak, 45, guilty of hiring two men to kill Fred Hamilton — on whom Leak held a $500,000 life insurance policy. One of the alleged hit men, John Brown, stood trial with Leak before Judge Diane Gordon Cannon.

“The defendant was the mastermind who set up this entire hit on Fred Hamilton,” assistant state’s attorney Tom Mahoney said during closing arguments Thursday.

Hamilton, 35, was shot nine times Feb. 3, 2004. Officers arrested Brown fleeing the scene. The other alleged hit man, Alfred Marley, was arrested later and pleaded guilty in exchange for a 27-year sentence. Marley testified against Leak and Brown.

In addition to being a 14-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, Leak is the nephew of Spencer Leak, president of Leak and Sons funeral homes on the South Side and former executive director of Cook County Jail.

“I’m happy he got convicted, because we knew he was guilty from the get-go,” said Fred Hamilton’s twin brother, Ned.

Hamilton had been an employee of the Leak funeral homes, and sources said Edward Leak and Hamilton were ripping off the business together. The men had also leased cars and taken out credit cards together.

Defense lawyers said the financial relationship between the men explained the life insurance policy, on which Leak submitted a claim after Hamilton’s murder.

In his closing, defense lawyer Patrick Tuite attacked Marley’s credibility and said the prosecution’s entire case depended on him.

But prosecutors said testimony, as well as cell phone records, proved Leak coordinated Hamilton’s murder.

Leak has been in the Cook County jail since July 15, 2005.

The jury was still out on Brown

Toronto Officer Dragged by Car

TORONTO

A driver who fled from city police, dragging an officer 25 metres in the process, lost control of his pickup on a highway off-ramp, went over a grass embankment and guardrail into traffic, where he slammed into a family’s minivan.

‘’When I saw the van (rolling) there ware arms flailing around and stuff because there were kids in there,'’ witness Alyre Glazer said Thursday.

‘’I thought for sure somebody is dead in there because the van I saw it roll at least 10 times,'’ Glazer said. ‘’It was in the air, then it hit the tar and it went tumbling. It was pretty bad.'’

Glazer said he missed being hit by the flying truck by mere seconds.

‘’I kind of wish it was me, because it was kids in there,'’ he said.

The driver’s name was not released but police said he has a lengthy history of driving offences and was barred for life from getting behind the wheel.

By sheer luck, no one was badly hurt in the crash, Sgt. Paul Lobsinger said.

Two small children in the minivan, along with their mother, were sent to hospital for treatment of cuts and bruises.

Their father was unhurt and could be seen walking around the wreckage as paramedics treated his loved ones.

The officer who was dragged suffered a sore shoulder, Lobsinger said.

‘’There was a confrontation, the suspect put it in drive, the officer was stuck on the side of the truck for approximately 25 metres before becoming disengaged,'’ Lobsinger said.

‘’She’s been checked out in hospital and thank goodness, everything is looking OK,'’ he said.

In fact, the officer was able to get back in her car and lead the chase after the suspect.

Virginia Deputy Shot During Chase

BLUEFIELD, Va.

A sheriff’s deputy was shot Friday after stopping a vehicle containing three robbery suspects, and authorities launched a manhunt in southwestern Virginia after they got away.

A middle school was shut down and state troopers were sent to protect the children inside.

Deputy Eric Mullins was treated for minor injuries at Bluefield Medical Center and released, said John Brown, a dispatcher for the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Department.

Mullins was shot about 6:40 a.m. Friday after he stopped a vehicle on U.S. 460, Brown said. The vehicle was carrying two men and a woman suspected of robbing two convenience stores in the county, Sheriff H.S. Caudill said.

Brown said Mullins called for backup, and Bluefield officers responded.

Caudill said shots were fired from the car, and a police officer returned fire.

New Mexico Officer Charged with Rape

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.

Albuquerque police Officer David Maes is being held at the Metro Detention Center on a $200,000 bond.

According to investigators, a woman arrested last Thursday told officers that Maes sexually assaulted her while she was in custody.

The Albuquerque Police Department’s sex crime unit spent this week investigating the allegations and this Thursday found probable cause to arrest Maes and charge him with rape.

Maes has never faced disciplinary problems in his 2 & 1/2 years on the force, but he was immediately placed on leave at the time of his arrest.

Police Chief Ray Schultz said, “This is a very discouraging incident. We hold our officers to the highest standard each and every day.”

Schultz said the Police Department has been working with the district attorney’s office since the allegation surfaced and he will assist the district attorney with complete prosecution of the case.

Police are refusing to release more details about exactly what happened between Maes and the victim, or even where the assault allegedly happened.

Officers have sealed the arrest warrant in the case.

MANKATO, Minn.

A Blue Earth County jailer who hit a prisoner with a Bible in February has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor fifth-degree assault.

Under the plea agreement, two gross misdemeanor charges of mistreatment of a confined person and misconduct by a public officer filed against James Lee Sheppard, 6, were dismissed.

A jail surveillance video showed part of the February assault, which was investigated by police after Sheppard reported the incident.

The investigating officer said the video showed Sheppard hitting the inmate with a book before grabbing him by the throat and slamming him against a set of steel bars.

According to the criminal complaint, the inmate said he was reading his Bible when Sheppard took it from him and hit him with it.

Police lose 45 Pounds Of Marijuana in Florida

LAKE COUNTY, Fla.

A drug sting mix-up allowed 45 pounds of marijuana to slip away from the cops who were tracking it.

Drug dogs sniffed out a combined total of 100 pounds of marijuana in two separate shipments that came into Orlando Sanford International Airport and Leesburg Regional Airport. Seminole and Lake County deputies allowed the drugs to get to their intended destination with plans to make a big bust, but somehow one of the shipments got away.

The sting operation didn’t happen exactly as deputies had planned.

“What happened right here, I don’t know, because I’m working all the time right here,” said Geraldo Overa.

Overa watched as his boss, Rigoberto Arvizu, was taken down for drug trafficking on Monday. Investigators said the first 55 pounds of marijuana were delivered to Rigo’s Custom Auto in Mount Dora. Knowing it would be delivered there, deputies staked out the site and pulled Arvizu’s car over nearby.

“Only police coming right here and check everything in this place. They never talked to me for anything,” Overa said.

But when it came time to intercept the second package, things didn’t go as planned. At an undisclosed location, cops set up sting number two, but were surprised when several cars showed up at the drug delivery point.

“A short while after the delivery of the package, there was a flurry of activity. A couple of vehicles came into the area and left shortly after. One vehicle took off through an orange grove and apparently that’s the vehicle that had the second package containing the marijuana,” explained Sgt. John Herrell, Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a police report, Guillermo Herrera was warned about the first bust and apparently took precautions. Herrera was still arrested, but someone got away with 45 pounds of marijuana, drugs that may now be on Lake County streets.

“We like to get all the bad guys, all the drugs 100 percent of the time, but that’s not always gonna be the case,” Herrell said.

So with two arrests, including three loaded firearms, investigators are hopeful they can locate the missing car and its driver, whether the drugs will be found is anyone’s guess.

Officers 19-year-old gf breaks up with him so he guns down Ex and 5 others

Posted in Police Stupidity, Civilian Deaths on October 7th, 2007

Six people and a shooter are dead after an off duty sheriff’s deputy who also worked as a police officer goes on a shooting spree in Crandon in far northern Wisconsin. The gunman, Tyler Peterson, who was 20, was apparently motivated by jealousy.

Witnesses say Peterson’s 19-year-old girlfriend had recently ended their relationship. It appears that she is among the victims, who range in age from 14 to 20. It appears the victims include two current students at Crandon High School and four recent graduates of the school.

Peterson was apparently on the run for a time. Crandon’s mayor, Gary Bradley, says it appears the suspect was killed by a sniper’s bullet.

Police Chief John Dennee read a short statement Sunday evening. “At approximately 2:47 AM, a city of Crandon police officer responded to gunshots at a residence in the city of Crandon. At this point there are six deceased in that residence. The subject was located by law enforcement officers, the subject is deceased and is no longer a threat to the public.” Authorities aren’t saying much more, but do confirm that Peterson was a sheriff’s deputy and a part time police officer in Crandon.

“This has been a very tragic evening,” said Forest County Supervisor Tom Vollmar. “It’s affected probably every family in this community.”

The whole neighborhood was still on lockdown Sunday. “Nobody expected anything like this,” Vollmar said. “I guess nobody anywhere ever does.”

Karly Johnson, 16, She said she knew the suspect and he helped her in a tech education class.

“He graduated with my brother,” she said. “He was nice. He was an average guy. Normal. You wouldn’t think he could do that.”

Jenna Bradley, 16, said she was told about 10 people were at a party at the ex-girlfriend’s apartment at the time of the shooting. She said she was shocked.

“It’s Crandon. Nothing happens in Crandon, ever,” she said.

Justin Tokarczyk, 17, said he was angry that someone in law enforcement was involved.

“You figured he would be here for safety,” Tokarczyk said. “I don’t know how anybody could think about doing that.”

Thirty-nine-year-old Jenny Stahl says one of the dead was her 14-year-old daughter, Lindsey Stahl. She says her daughter called last night and asked if she could sleep over at a friend’s house.
